Even mentioning a fork and going along with it, like what the others said, means that we leave an empty shell, one that can host their own editors to take over the content that we left behind. And this is not an isolated incident, Fandom has actually banned linking to several forked wikis as a result. For instance, trying to link to a forked wiki can be seen as a threat waiting to happen, because that forked wiki is now attempting to undercut the Fandom wiki. Fandom as a whole is so monopolized in the global scheme of wikis that it's nearly impossible to strike a protest against changes done on Fandom.įandom is very strict on what wikis can do as a whole. It's very complicated, but the simple answer is: it is hard to stand up against change, when the community as a whole has no incentive to see why this change is damaging. Most higher-level Gamepedia staff aren't with Fandom anymore. Wikis that were part of Gamepedia aren't that different from wikis that weren't now. (It's slower, it's more error-prone, it has a rather complex JS interface as opposed to the simpler one for a text area, it doesn't always have accurate previews, and it's missing features like debug reports or some warnings.)Īlso, Gamepedia kind of died out already. The 2010 editor was only re-introduced when multiple specific issues were raised with only having the 2017 editor. I do tend to report specific issues when I find them.Īs a major decision that did end up reversed, there was an issue with platform "unification" when they originally wanted to only keep the 2017 editor for wikitext. I personally kind of gave up on trying to turn everything around on a fundamental level. And unless some more or less objective criticism is raised, Fandom can claim their research and data (which are almost certainly a trade secret, of course, along with how they were gathered and researched) show that their implementation serves the readers better. In addition, Fandom can easily and plausibly claim that user disapproval is only reasonable if it addresses specific issues, and many times even when specific concerns are raised (such as increased padding or font size on many elements) that preferences there are subjective. ![]() I believe users of platforms like Fandom shouldn't generally expect that their disapproval of key strategic moves will see them reversed. Besides, what you see as "heavily/widely disliked changes" are often mildly disliked changes, since there are editors or readers who actually may enjoy the changes. So to answer your question, we simply roll over and accept changes because there isn't much we as this small editor community can realistically do. Moving the wiki elsewhere is extremely difficult as /u/AttemptToCallNil mentioned. Voicing concerns is really the biggest step we can realistically do. We as users/wiki admins can't really do much ( neither can many employees based on Glassdoor reviews). Unless there is a change which enrages almost everyone in the community I don't think Fandom will take any steps to reevaluate the changes, at most small cosmetic touches are made based on the feedback, but core initiatives are not being reverted. In my experience back when Gamepedia existed (it doesn't exist anymore, the brand has been converted to little icon on the wiki header) my feedback was actually taken seriously, and when there were changes I could see the company taking a step back and reevaluating when the userbase reacted negatively. Been advocating for better editor experience for a long time as regular user/wiki administrator. I've been user of Gamepedia for like 7 years.
